Once I had finished painting the lettering I was nearly done. In my original sketches I had intended for the 'ear covers' on the helmet to be gray or silver, but as I worked on the project I went back and forth in my mind whether to actually do that part of the paint job. In the end I decided I wanted both the sliver and the antenna to give it more of that 'space alien' look that the project was originally about.
So I went back and masked off the ears and painted them silver. For the antenna I simply used a long nail cut in half and pierced into the vinyl portion of the ear (as opposed to the sculpey portion that I had added. In retrospect I should have drilled the hole for the antenna at the very beginning rather than trying to do it at the end.
On the left you can see the finished project in its home on my toy shelf next to some of my ready made toys.
I've already received one question about how I photographed Drupal Icon Munny with the white background. The photo was actually taken with the toy standing on a white sheet of paper draped over an aerosol can in front of my LCD monitor displaying a blank white page. In other words its completely back lit by my monitor with no other lights on in the room. To light the front, I simply held a mirror in front to reflect light back.
I hope some of the information in this how-to was useful. Thanks for your interest in the project. If you have any questions just leave comment.
